Summary
The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) is an international organization established in 1982 under the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which forms part of the wider Antarctic Treaty System. Headquartered in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, CCAMLR is responsible for the conservation and sustainable management of marine living resources in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. CCAMLR coordinates scientific research, fisheries management (with particular attention to species such as Antarctic krill and toothfish), marine protected area initiatives, compliance monitoring, and measures to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Because its mandate includes marine ecosystem conservation as well as management of fishing activities within the region, it fulfils roles equivalent to those of RSCAPs (regional seas conventions and action plans) in other regions, as well as of a general RFMO (regional fishieries management organization). CCAMLR is therefore sometimes included on lists of both RSCAPs and RFMOs.
