Summary
The Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, adopted in 2007 and in force since 2015, provides a legal basis for countries to remove shipwrecks that pose a danger to safety of humans, goods, property, or the marine environment. The convention has provisions that apply within and beyond terrritorial seas, covering wrecks as well as lost cargo from ships. The overarching aim of the convention is to eliminate risks that abandoned wrecks (and their cargo) can pose to navigational safety and the environment.
