Summary

MARPOL Annex VI entered into force in 2005. It is an addition to the combined instrument of MARPOL (the 1973 Convention and 1978 Protocol, in force since 1983), which aims to protect the marine environment from pollution by oil and other harmful substances from ships. Annex IV focuses ship-borne air pollution, setting limits for nitrogen and sulphur oxide emissions from ship exhausts, with lower limits in designated emission control areas. The Annex was updated in 2011 to mandate measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
