Summary

The International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships (Anti-Fouling Convention) is a convention adopted by members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The convention aims to prevent adverse environmental impacts from the use of anti-fouling systems on ships, and the biocides they can contain. It prohibits the use of harmful organotins in anti-fouling paints and contains provisions for preventing the future use of other harmful substances as antifoulants. Responsibility for compliance lies with flag states. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed global guidelines to support the implementation of the provisions in this convention.
